General information

This article provides general information and requirements related to backup data deletion in Xopero ONE.

Data deletion

Data deletion is a fundamental process in every backup system. Some backup mechanisms perform data deletion automatically, while others require manual execution by the administrator.

Whenever you attempt to delete data manually, Xopero ONE system will always request confirmation before proceeding.

Automatic deletion

Automatic deletion is handled through the retention policy configured for each backup plan. Available retention options include:

  1. Infinite – data is never deleted.

  2. Time-based – data is retained for a defined period.

  3. Copy-based – data is retained for a specified number of backup versions.

Retention policies ensure that older backup versions remain available for recovery while preventing storage from reaching its full capacity.

Manual deletion may be necessary when storage is already full and you need to free up space to continue running your backup plans. Manual deletion is performed by the system administrator and can be initiated at any time.

The requirements for data deletion are:

Removing backups from S3-compliant storages

This article describes how to delete backups from AWS S3 and other S3-compliant storages with versioning enabled in the Xopero ONE platform.

Removing backups from S3 storages with versioning enabled

When using S3 or S3-compliant storage with versioning enabled, files deleted through Xopero ONE may not be physically removed. Although the files are no longer visible in the bucket, they may still occupy storage space.

If you do not want data to be versioned, disable the versioning mechanism in the bucket settings. Otherwise, you can regularly delete the files.

To permanently delete files inside the bucket, follow these steps:

  1. Sign in to the AWS Management Console and open the Amazon S3 console.

  2. In the Buckets list, choose the name of the bucket that contains the object.

  3. In the Objects list, choose the name of the object.

  4. Choose Versions (Amazon S3 shows all the versions for the object).

  5. Select the check box next to the Version ID for each version that you want to permanently delete.

  6. Choose Delete.

  7. In Permanently delete objects?, enter permanently delete.

  8. Choose Delete objects.

When you permanently delete an object version, the action cannot be undone.
