Whole VM Recovery

PreviousRecovery Process OverviewNextGranular Recovery Of Files & Folders - iSCSI Restore

Last updated 1 year ago

The first method that allows restoring your VMware Virtual Machine is Whole VM recovery. This feature allows you to create a new Virtual Machine in the original location or in a different location.

Restore view

At the beginning open the VMware tab to list your vCenters/ESXi hosts connected to Xopero ONE.

Click Manage & Restore button next to the VMware ESXi/vCenter that was the original host of Virtual Machine that you want to restore. After doing so, the list of all your Virtual Machines(within this VMware host) will be displayed:

Click the Restore button, find the Virtual Machine that you want to restore, and click the Restore button in the same row(same as on the screenshot above). That will display another aside, where you have to select the Backup plan(that you want to restore your Virtual Machine from) and choose the version by clicking on the specific date.

After that, click the Restore button next to chosen version. This will display all 3 possible options to restore your VM data:

Click the Whole machine button to proceed.

Whole machine recovery

After using that button, the system will display the VMware options form.

The first important field of this form is:

Restore to

A field that allows you to select whether you want to restore your Virtual Machine to its original location or to a new one.

The Original location option will automatically load all the settings from backup, so the Virtual Machine will be restored to the same ESXi/vCenter, to the same Datastore(Compute resource, VM folder and with the same Virtual network settings), the only thing that can be modified is the VM name. The second possibility, which is a New location, which will also unlock all the other fields:

VMware environment

Field, where you can select ESXi host/ vCenter, to which the data will be restored(the list shows only servers that are connected to Xopero ONE).

Compute resource

That can be selected using Select compute resource aside

Datastore

The location where Virtual Machine files will be held. Xopero ONE loads within a selected VMware environment.

VM folder

Is a part, where you can select the exact directory on the datastore, to which the VM will be restored.

Virtual network

After filling out the form click the Next button to proceed to the next step, which is Restore data view.

The last step before starting the process has 4 additional options:

VMware power state

Is a special section dedicated to where you can decide, whether the Virtual Machine should be started right after the restore or should it stay offline.

Transport method

Similarly as in backup, there are a few transport methods available that you can choose:

  • Automatic - Xopero ONE will verify what options are available for specific worker and and there will be used.,

  • HotAdd - available only for Virtual Appliance worker. It takes a snapshot and creates a linked close of the target virtual machine. The disk is being attached to the worker, which reads the linked clone's virtual disks for backup,

  • LAN - also known as NBD/NBDSSL. In this mode, the ESXi host reads data from the storage and sends it across a network to the worker; it's usually used when no other transport method is available.

Restore settings

This section is limited only to one option, which is bandwidth usage reducement - use it to prevent your network overloading, while running the restore task.

Device used to restore the data

Also known as the Worker - is a device that is directly responsible for the restore process of your Virtual Machine. You can have many workers and use different workers for each backup plan/restore process. A worker can be both a physical machine and a virtual machine.

After providing all the details click the Start now button to run the restore process. You can verify the progress of the restore process by opening the Tasks tab, which shows all running processes.

Devices with macOS are not supported as device used to restore the data of VMware.
