Image-level Backup Recovery As An Image File And iSCSI - Granular Recovery Of Files & Folders

PreviousDrive image backup recoveryNextImage-level backup recovery as a BMR - recover the entire OS, data, and applications

Last updated 2 years ago

In this article, you will find out how to restore the data from an Image-level backup. There're three different options for Image-backup recovery that you can choose from, depending on your preferences and needs.

Opening restore view

In the beginning, you have to open restore view. There are two ways to do it:

  • Open the Devices tab and select the Restore button next to the device whose data you want to restore.

After choosing the device that you want to restore, select the plan that included the data that you need to be recovered from the View available plans field.

On the very bottom of this view you will find information on which agent you are using to view the storage. You can change the device by clicking the Change button. Make sure that device used for this process can access the storage.

  • You can also open the Storages tab, select storage where the backup data is located, and click the folder icon to Browse storage.

After choosing the storage, an additional step is to select the device whose data you want to restore. Continue to select the Backup plan that you want and see information about the agent used to connect to the storage.

Select a backup plan

After choosing the right devices and backup plan the system will display the Backup copies section, where you can select the version of backup that you want to restore. Click on one of the displayed dates and then select the Restore button.

This will show 3 ways to restore your data, that are described below:

iSCSI target

The first option - the iSCSI target function allows you to very quickly create and share an iSCSI resource using the TCP/IP protocol. You can connect this iSCSI resource to any device, without having to restore copies to other locations. You can use this restore method for granular restoration and easily copy files using file explorer. In case of failure, you can also connect the iSCSI resource as a virtual machine disk.

First, you have to select all by clicking Restore all or a particular disk and click Restore selected.

If would like to modify Data to restore(to be included in that process) you can go back to selection window with the Edit button.

iSCSI worker section gives you possibility to select the device, which will be a host of iSCSI target. You can change the device by clicking the Edit button.

Next in iSCSI settings select the network interface(the recommended is the same interface as is shown in iSCSI worker section) and port. Accept the default values or specify the other.

As in the previous step accept the default iSCSI target name or specify the other. The Run iSCSI button starts the iSCSI service.

If you have set up the restore properly, information about it should show up on the Current tasks list in the Task tab.

Mounting the iSCSI resource - example

Run the iSCSI Initiator, e.g press Windows Key and R Key at the same time(run window should appear), and type "iscsicpl.exe" then accept with the OK button. Enter the IP address of the network interface from Xopero ONE iSCSI configuration in the Targets tab > the Target field, then click Quick Connect.

The iSCSI Initiator searches for available iSCSI targets and adds them to the Discovered Targets list. Close the window with the Done button.

If everything works properly, then the target's status changes to Connected.

Run the Computer Management, e.g press Windows Key and R Key at the same time(run window should appear) and type "compmgmt.msc" then accept with OK button. Go to the Disk Management section.

Look for a new disk in the list and then initialize it using right mouse button and selecting Online status.

After a while, the disk should be available.

File image

The second possibility is tou to download a previously created disk copy as a disk image file. In the beginning, you have to select Disk to restore and click Restore selected.

If you would like to modify your choice on previous step, you can undo your selection with the Edit button in Data to restore section.

Next, select the Image format from the list of options:

  • RAW

  • VHD

  • VHDX

  • VMDK

In Restore to section you can select the device to which you want to restore the data. You can change the device by clicking the Edit button.

Now define the exact path to restore the data in Restore directory section.

Keep in mind that the restored image size will be equal to your original disk capacity!

At the end of Restore settings have three checkboxes with additional restore settings you can use:

  • Overwrite existing data - to decide whether you want to overwrite(or not) existing files in restore directory,

  • Restore files permissions - to restore original permissions of the files,

  • Reduce bandwidth - to reduce the network usage during the restore process.

Run restore with Start now button.

So if image file creation starts properly, the recovery progress will be available for tracking from the Task tab on the left menu.
