VM Backup Doesn’t Contain Some Files

Symptoms

Permissions to Datastore Browser are governed by vCenter Server permissions. In some cases, you want to disable access to Datastore Browser for security purposes or to eliminate the risk of a user being able to access the core virtual machine files and folders contained on the datastores.

To enable the Datastore Browser feature:

  1. Stop the VirtualCenter Server service.

  2. Take a backup of the C:\ProgramData\VMware\VMware VirtualCenter\vpxd.cfg file. For vCenter Server Appliance - /etc/vmware-vpx/vpxd.cfg file. Additionally, you can create a snapshot of the machine with the vSphere server. In case of any failure of the operation, it is enough to restore the machine to its previous state.

  3. Open the vpxd.cfg file using a text editor.

  4. Locate the <vpxd> tags and add the following entry in tags. <enableHttpDatastoreAccess>true</enableHttpDatastoreAccess>

  5. Save the changes to the vpxd.cfg file.

  6. Start the VirtualCenter Server service.

  7. Now you will be able to create a backup of problematic files.
